Chemical properties and storage methods of trimethylbenzene phosphate
2024-12-26
The chemical properties and storage methods of Phosphotrimethylphenol (or Trimethylphenyl Phosphate, often abbreviated as TMPP) are as follows:
Chemical Properties
- Molecular Structure and Formula: TMPP belongs to the category of phosphate esters, with a chemical formula of (CH3C6H4O)3P=O or C21H21O3P. It exists as a colorless or light yellow transparent oily liquid, with a relative density of approximately 1.162 (at 25°C).
- Physical State and Solubility: TMPP is an oil-like liquid at room temperature. It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, chloroform, benzene, and glacial acetic acid.
- Thermal Stability: TMPP has a high boiling point, typically around 410°C (with partial decomposition). It remains stable under normal conditions and does not burn.
- Toxicity: TMPP is toxic, especially its ortho-isomer, which is approximately 10 times more toxic than other isomers.

Storage Methods
- Storage Environment: TMPP should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated warehouse, away from fire sources and heat.
- Container Sealing: The storage container should be kept tightly sealed to prevent evaporation and leakage.
- Compatibility: TMPP should be stored separately from oxidants, acids, and edible chemicals to avoid potential chemical reactions.
- Emergency Handling: In case of leakage, personnel should evacuate to a safe area, and the leakage area should be isolated with strict access control. The fire source should be cut off immediately. Emergency personnel should wear self-contained positive-pressure breathing apparatus and protective clothing to avoid direct contact with the leaked material. Small leaks can be absorbed with sand, dry lime, or soda ash, while large leaks should be collected using dikes or pits, covered with foam to reduce vapor hazards, and then transferred to tank trucks or dedicated collectors for recycling or disposal.
- Protective Measures: When handling TMPP, personnel should wear self-priming filter-type gas masks (half masks), chemical safety goggles, rubber protective clothing, and chemical-resistant gloves. Smoking, eating, and drinking are prohibited in the workplace. After work, personnel should thoroughly wash and store contaminated clothing separately after washing.
In summary, Phosphotrimethylphenol exhibits specific chemical properties and requires careful handling and storage to ensure safety.
