Chemical properties of beeswax
2024-12-23
I. Main components
The main chemical components of beeswax include esters, free acids, free alcohols and hydrocarbons, in addition to traces of volatile oils and pigments. Specifically, the main components of beeswax are fatty acid esters (about 70% 72%), free fatty acids (about 14% 15%), saturated alkanes (about 12%), as well as a small amount of free fatty alcohols, minerals, water, and trace amounts of flavonoids, vitamins, and other organic matter.
2. the physical properties and chemical properties
Physical Properties
Color: The color of beeswax varies from light yellow, medium yellow or dark brown and white, which is mainly due to the presence of fat-soluble carotenoids or other pigments in pollen and propolis.
State: At room temperature, beeswax is in solid state, soft texture, plasticity and lubricity.
Odor: Beeswax has the special fragrance of honey and powder, does not stick to the teeth when chewing, is white after chewing and has no greasy taste.
Specific gravity and melting point: the specific gravity of beeswax is about 0.9540.964, melting point is 6267℃.
Chemical Properties
Solubility: Beeswax is insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as benzene, toluene, chloroform, ethyl ether, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide (above 30℃), turpentine and so on. Slightly soluble in ethanol, but under certain conditions, beeswax can form emulsion with water.
Flammability: Beeswax is a flammable substance, it should be kept away from fire sources during storage and use to prevent fire.
Stability: Beeswax is quite complex but is relatively easy to store as it does not contain biologically active substances. However, prolonged exposure to the sun will diminish the color of beeswax and even cause it to melt and decompose.
3.Chemical Reaction
Beeswax will melt when heated, and the melted beeswax has a slightly lower relative density and is easy to mix with other substances. At 300℃, beeswax will decompose into carbon dioxide, acetic acid and other volatile substances.
In summary, beeswax has unique chemical and physical properties, which make it widely used in many fields. At the same time, when storing and using beeswax, you need to pay attention to its flammability and sensitivity to light to ensure safety.
