Iron oxide (also known as iron red, rust, iron oxide red, ferric oxide) is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Fe2O3, a molecular weight of 159.69 g/mol, a reddish brown powder, odorless, and a form of iron oxide. Iron oxide is insoluble in water, organic acids, and organic solvents [1], soluble in hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, and slightly soluble in nitric acid [2]. Iron oxide is often present in natural hematite minerals and is the main component of rust. Iron oxide can be reduced by reducing gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen to produce iron. By utilizing this property, iron oxide is also widely used in industrial ironmaking. Iron oxide is widely used for coloring paints, rubber, plastics, buildings, ceramics, etc. It can also be used as a food grade red pigment, analytical reagent, catalyst, and polishing agent.
